Parametric instabilities of large-amplitude parallel propagating Alfvén waves: 2-D PIC simulation

چکیده
We discuss the parametric instabilities of large-amplitude parallel propagating Alfvén waves using the 2-D PIC simulation code. First, we confirmed the results in the past study [Sakai et al., 2005] that the electrons are heated due to the modified two stream instability and that the ions are heated by the parallel propagating ion acoustic waves. However, although the past study argued that such parallel propagating longitudinal waves are excited by transverse modulation of parent Alfvén wave, we consider these waves are more likely to be generated by the usual, parallel decay instability. Further, we performed other simulation runs with different polarization of the parent Alfvén waves or the different ion thermal velocity. Numerical results suggest that the electron heating by the modified two stream instability due to the large amplitude Alfvén waves is unimportant with most parameter sets. Resonant drive and nonlinear suppression of gradient-driven instabilities via interaction with shear Alfvén waves
The nonlinear interaction of shear Alfvén waves and gradient-driven instabilities on pressure gradients in the Large Plasma Device (LAPD) [Gekelman et al., Rev. Sci. Instrum. 62, 2875 (1991)] at UCLA is explored. Nonlinear response at the beat frequency between two shear Alfvén waves is shown to resonantly drive unstable modes as well as otherwise damped modes. Resonantly driving the damped mod...

Two magnetic hole events observed by Polar on 20 May 1996 when it was in the polar cap/polar cusp boundary layer are studied. Low-frequency waves, consisting of nonlinear Alfvén waves and large amplitude (±14 nT peakto-peak) obliquely propagating proton cyclotron waves (with frequency f ∼0.6 to 0.7fcp), accompanied by electric bipolar pulses (electron holes) and electron heating have been obser...
متن کاملIon Pickup by Finite Amplitude Parallel Propagating Alfvén Waves
Two scenarios of possible ion heating due to finite amplitude parallel propagating Alfvén waves in the solar atmosphere are investigated using a 1D test particle approach. 1. A finite amplitude Alfvén wave is instantly introduced into a plasma (or equivalently, new ions are instantly created). 2. New ions are constantly created. In both scenarios, ions will be picked up by the Alfvén wave. In c...

متن کاملNonlinear evolution of parallel propagating Alfvén waves: Vlasov - MHD simulation
Nonlinear evolution of circularly polarized Alfvén waves are discussed by using the recently developed Vlasov-MHD code, which is a generalized Landaufluid model. The numerical results indicate that as far as the nonlinearity in the system is not so large, the Vlasov-MHD model can validly solve time evolution of the Alfvénic turbulence both in the linear and nonlinear stages. The present Vlasov-...
